Indicator:
30 Average percentage of smallholder post-harvest losses at the storage stage
Rationale:
This indicator assesses the success of supply-side interventions to reduce postharvest losses by measuring the changes in the proportion of total production that is lost during storage over a specified period. By the end of the CSP, it would be desirable to see a reduction in the average storage losses in targeted value chains.
Applicability:
The indicator applies to all countries in which WFP implements production and or market support activities – either directly or in partnership with other organizations – with the intent to improve households’ postharvest management practices and reduce postharvest losses. Therefore, the indicator applies to all WFP Smallholder Agricultural Market Support (SAMS) programmes that include a PHL component.
Questionnaire:
The electronic version of the questions associated with this indicator can be found in Survey Designer by selecting the indicator Post-Harvest Losses at the Storage Stage (Indicator 30)
Important Considerations:
1. Countries should insert a list of the “targeted commodities” applicable to country program, replacing the generic "Commodity 1, etc...) provided in Survey Designer:
PSamsPHLCommName - What is the name of commodity # 1 ?
1 Commodity 1 (To be specified)
2 Commodity 2 (To be specified)
3 Commodity 3 (To be specified)
999 Other
2. Countries should adapt the list of units to locally relevant lists of units as many questions, including the question for calculating this indicator depend on collecting quantity and unit of measure.
3. Because this indicator is disaggregated and reported by “food group”, it is important to properly categorize the commodity within its correct food group. Instead of asking respondents, enumerators will be asked to do this. Enumerators should be given a simple training of the different commodities and which food groups they will fall under.
PSAMSPHLCommClass - Which of the following groups does this commodity belong to?
ENUMERATOR: Interviewer is to classify the type of commodity. If not sure, enter description in the other field to help data analysts classify what group this commodity belongs to.
1 Grain (cereals, pulses, seeds)
2 Fruits and Vegetables
3 Roots and tubers
4 Animals and animal products
999 Other
