Indicator:

31. Percentage of targeted smallholder farmers reporting increased production of nutritious crops.

Rationale:

Value chain development programmes that support smallholder farmers producing, improving post-harvest management and accessing markets can contribute to diversifying the foods available and accessible to consumers, by increasing smallholders’ production and sales of diverse and nutritious foods.

Consumption of diverse and nutritious diets is one approach to improving diet quality, particularly when it enhances the intake of key micronutrients.

Applicability:

This indicator applies to countries in which WFP implements smallholder agricultural market support activities with a deliberate intent to achieve nutritional outcomes, among others. In particular, it applies to programmes aiming at improving the production and ideally consumption of nutritious crops, for example by improving access to bio-fortified seeds, promoting food fortification, promoting market access for nutritiuos commodities (e.g. through direct procurement or facilitating connections with other buyers), promoting consumption  of nutritious food through social and behavior change communication etc.

Questionnaire:

The electronic version of the questions associated with this indicator can be found in Survey Designer by selecting the indicator Increased Production of Nutritious Crops (Indicator 31)

Important Considerations:

  1. Because this indicator is based on matching records from one year to another for the same farmer, it is important to have an easy/reliable way to link the records from two different survey rounds. Unique IDs can serve this purpose. If the farmer is part of a smallholder aggregatrion system, the member ID should be used.  If not part of an aggregations system, records can be linked by phone number.

  2. Countries should adapt the list of units to locally relevant lists of units as many questions, including the question for calculating this indicator depend on collecting quantity and units.

  3. Countries should adapt the list of locally targeted WFP supported nutritious crops. Refer to the CRF indicator sheet for definition of “nutritious crops”.

Indicator calculation:

Scripts in R, STATA and SPSS and sample data are available on github for calculating this indicator.
