By working with national stakeholders and NMHSs to analyse seasonal and weather forecast data, WFP supports the development of trigger models for Anticipatory Action (AA) programmes that reduce the humanitarian impact of climate hazards. In coordination with WFP’s Climate and Resilience Service, this approach uses forecasts to anticipate events like droughts, floods, and tropical cyclones, enabling timely action before disaster strikes.
We help strengthen NMHSs’ capacity to assess forecasting systems and identify reliable triggers for AA, supporting early interventions that protect food security and livelihoods. WFP also develops dashboards for real-time tracking of forecasts, triggers, and thresholds, ensuring timely response and clear communication with partners. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to build national capacity for managing climate risks, as demonstrated by recent support to Country Offices in Mozambique and Zimbabwe ahead of cyclones and droughts.
