# Planning a Nutrition Vulnerability Analysis (NVA)

Before conducting an NVA, it is essential to first carry out a data mapping exercise for the areas under consideration. This helps determine whether there is indeed a gap in reliable data and clarifies the added value that the NVA could provide. The NVA is most appropriate in contexts where there is a lack of quality nutrition outcome data—such as representative surveys or exhaustive screenings [in line with IPC protocols](https://www.ipcinfo.org/ipcinfo-website/resources/resources-details/en/c/1159568/). A thorough review of existing data sources and stakeholders present in the area should therefore be conducted. Given the potential sensitivity of information, it is also important to establish and agree upon an information-sharing protocol in advance.
