# Data Collection Modes

**Face to Face versus Remote/CATI**

In Step 1 of Survey Designer, a user can choose between Face to face or Remote Survey/CATI modes.

**What's the difference?**

Experience and evidence has shown that remote surveys should be kept short and succint. By default, when a user selects Remote Survey/CATI in Survey Designer only the following sub-modules appear.

1. Technical
  1. Technical (Basic)
  2. Consent
2. Demographic
  1. Demographic (Basic)
  2. Education
3. Food Consumption Score
  1. Food Consumption Score (FCS)
4. Coping Strategies
  1. Livelihood Coping Strategies (FS)
  2. Reduced Coping Strategies (rCSI)
5. Nutrition
  1. Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W)

Depending on the context and specific information needs, user's may wish to add additional modules.

1) navigating through the codebook browser to find the specific module

2) leaving the mode option empty and not selecting either Face to face or Remote Survey/CATI modes.
