Assessment Calendar

Prev Next

The Assessment Calendar is a strategic planning tool that helps Country Offices schedule assessments in a way that provides holistic evidence of the food security situation for relevant population groups and aligns with seasonal patterns, programmatic needs, and partner coordination. It is a key component of preparedness and evidence-based decision-making.

Purpose of the Assessment Timeline

A well-structured timeline ensures that assessments are:

  • Conducted at the most relevant time of year (e.g., lean season)

  • Aligned with key decision-making processes (e.g. CSP development, IPC analysis, HNO deadline)

  • Coordinated with government and partner activities

  • Supported by adequate resources and staffing

Planning Considerations

When developing an assessment timeline, consider the following:

  • Seasonality: Following the WFP Minimum Monitoring Requirements, schedule an annual food security assessment to capture at minimum the lean season peak food insecurity trends. If budget allows and the context changes seasonally, conducting another assessment during the post-harvest season enables evidence seasonal variations in food security and livelihoods.

  • Assessment type: Different assessments (e.g. EFSA, JAM, CFSVA) require different lead times and levels of preparation

  • Data needs: Align timing with when data is needed for programming, advocacy, or reporting

  • Modality: In-depth assessments are often done face-to-face, while regular monitoring of food security trends can be done through regular remote mVAM surveys

  • Coordination: Engage with partners early to avoid duplication and promote joint planning

  • Resources: Ensure sufficient time for mobilizing staff, funding, and logistics
